What is an onboarding fee and is it negotiable?
Amounts vary enormously, from waived to several thousand dollars, and the variation does not track the work as closely as you would expect. Onboarding is also one of the most negotiable numbers in the entire proposal, because it is a one-time cost in a deal the company hopes runs for years.
Three things worth asking. What is actually included — specifically, how far back the ledger and violation history are imported, because a company that loads current balances and nothing else has handed your treasurer a problem. Whether it is waived on a longer initial term. And whether it is charged again if you renew or expand.
Compare it as part of a three-year total, not as a separate number. A waived onboarding fee attached to a higher monthly rate is not a discount, and a Board that compares only the monthly figure will not see it.
